Chinese New Year was my new year. The lunar new year.
I spent the day cleaning.
cyberwolf007 & his bf Jay (who I often refer to as "the boys") came over early in the evening and joined my parents and I for our New Year feast at Heaven Dragon.
The manager moved us to a table further back from the path where the lion dancers were to come through.
We asked if there was a special New Year menu, but there wasn't one. I ordered a gorgeous dish titled Happy Family, consisting of sauteed chicken, beef, shrimp, miniature corn cobs, mushrooms, bamboo chutes, broccoli, and bok choy in a delicate tangy brown sauce. I accompanied it with egg drop soup, an egg roll, and steamed rice. Dad ordered a strong yet sweet drink for me called a Scorpion. It was like vodka and kool aide. >;-)
Of course, I consumed enough house tea to burst at the seams.
So drinks+too much food=fat, happy lynx ball!
A deafening display of firecrackers went off outside the restaurant, and people left their tables to watch. Fifteen minutes later the lion dancers came through. The big puppet-like costumes were breath-taking! Everyone clapped and delighted in their whimsy. Then the biggest lion came to our table and the fellow inside manning the head "devoured" me, placing the lion's head over me! It was so big it nearly engulfed all of me. Well, to my waist. >;-)
The lion left after a moment that seemed an eternity. He was followed by a fellow in a red robe with a stuffed portruding tummy. He held a mask of a bald and grinning monk over his face and a large fan in the other hand. He fanned me, the boys, and my parents before catching up to the lions and fanning them.
Was the fellow a representaion of Buddha? Hotei?
What a magical, powerful experience. It was very emotionally moving to me.
