The weekend was amazing. Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] spiritcougar took the boys and I up to a beautiful, fairly remote state park/scenic viewpoint thirty minutes beyond Golden. We drove high into the foothills and partially up a mountain. The aspens were golden and radiant among the pine. The air was crisp and filling as only mountain air is, with the intoxicating scents of wood and wild. It reminded me of my childhood in the Continental Divide; at the age of seven, I recall how full the air made my lungs feel, despite the high altitude. I felt I could survive on the air alone for sustenance.

A crow flew beside the car as we neared the scenic overlook. I mistook the crow for a raven initially, it was so large. At the overlook we took photos, brought to you by the digital camera given to me by [livejournal.com profile] tornir. I gave [livejournal.com profile] cyberwolf007 the mantle of official picture-taker, while I directed him. I’ll let the photos do the talking:

Neat roots!

Sun through the trees, mountain range in distance

Cool stump, exposed roots, stones and trees

Sunday my parents and I went to the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder. It was their annual Fall Fest, and vendors dotted the mall with handmade art, crafts, and food. A stage was set up for bands to play. There was a display boasting this year’s winners of a carved pumpkin contest, and they were truly amazing: one had a perfectly cut, whittled, and textured buffalo countenance.

There was a small tent for the Colorado State Parks, which had a slew of hides and taxidermy of local wildlife (for educational purposes, not for sale); a full black bear taxidermy, a bobcat taxidermy, a coyote taxidermy, and several pelts (probably fox, raccoon, mountain lion, beaver, etc.). They also had a guy in a big semi-cartoony gray wolf suit, who was their ambassador for children.

Window-shopped the engaging Halloween displays in various shops. The store Paper Doll took the cake, with a realistic, aged-looking, life-sized skeleton bride and groom. The bride sat on a stool in a full Victorian bridal gown, and the groom, in tails and top hat, stood behind her, his arms on her shoulders. Fake spider webs and dust covered their joints and littered the window corners. A charming job!
