Bluejay and northern flicker joy!
Jan. 2nd, 2007 12:40 pmI love bluejays. I love to watch the trio that come to the courtyard daily, that play in the Austrian pine and tease the squirrels and one another. They never cease to make me smile, to make my breath catch in my throat. Their blue feathers stand-out like mica in sunlight.
The giant northern flicker is a joy to watch. It clings to the cage of suet secured to the gnarled old apple tree. Sometimes it, too, joins in the bluejays' festivities.
A few crows haunt the area, but rarely enter the courtyard. I hear them loudly most mornings demanding peanuts. Mom immediately goes out to feed them. The birds and squirrels have Mom trained well.
