The one I'm currently reading thoroughly is Graeme Gibson's The Bedside Book of Birds: An Avian Miscellany, which is amazing. We bought this title about a year ago and we use it regularly. The illustrations are excellent and the text is lucid and helpful. We have lots of bird guides, but this is the one we carry in our backpack while hiking.
